Dealing with Lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life

Just one question or may be not just one, what desire does one seek to satisfy when doing particular acts? Watching porn, oral sex, one night stands (fornication), jerking off (masturbation), homosexuality, orgies…the list is endless. What’s the source of all these sins? Lets have a look at this. (Please post a comment on your thoughts on this)

When you give a second thought on these acts, they all seem to originate from lust of the flesh (Self-indulgent desire to please the flesh) and lust of the eyes (the eyes are the gateway to your soul). It is written “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” 1 John 2:16. These are the 3 inner characters of humans that lead us to sin. One thing about counselling is that it seeks to help those who know they have a problem, just like the gospel.

There has been a great controversy for years on whether masturbation, porn, oral sex, homosexuality is biblically wrong. Jesus was the great Counsellor. As the word says, ‘When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor–sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Mark 2:17. I believe all these are sins. No grey area in my mind at all.

So my view on this is, when masturbating, one is defiling him/herself either way you look at it, whether voluntary or compulsive. This act is out of lust of the flesh, self gratification. Porn, a physical glorification of at least one individual indulging in sexual immorality, modern day idolatry. One can justify sin to the end of the world, doesn’t make a sin right in God’s eyes.  I used to be in this space, looking for loopholes from the word to justify why I drunk as well as other acts. But the HOLY SPIRIT happened in me. Granted me self-control, faithfulness, goodness… Questions I asked myself, if I was infront of God, would I excuse myself to go jack-off or watch porn, then continue in conversation with Him with no remorse? Does masturbation glory God in anyway?  When performing oral sex to your spouse, whats the source of one learning how to do this? Does porn glorify the One who created sex? I still have so many questions which I seek God each day for answers.

For most, there is a feeling of emptiness despite the 10 minutes of pleasure. Just to take the discussion back to the right track, the gospel, all we do on earth, in this life, will be counted & weighed on the day of Judgement. I advice all to pray that the Holy spirit gives them discernment to make the right choices. I choose to test the spirit of all I allow into my mind, body and spirit through consultation with God Almight.

The true gospel is Jesus dies for our sins and was resurrected so that we can be justified. So as Paul challenges us, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” Rom 6:1-2.

I could write 10 blog posts in response to this one. I stumbled upon this through a friend’s tweet.
To start with, please indicate where in the bible masturbation, oral sex, fornication etc are named as sins.
When you find them (trust me, you will – google will help here), compare them with these verses:
Psalms 137:9 “Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!”
Ezekiel 9:5 “However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you.”

So murder and slavery are condoned in these two verses yet you say masturbation & fornication are “Biblicaly wrong”. There are several more instances where acts we would consider morally wrong are condoned in the bible.

To declare an act wrong because the bible says it’s wrong, would also compel you to declare an act right if the bible says so. If your sole basis for whether a deed is good or bad is biblical, then there are several actions that you must perform and several more that you must avoid in order to lead a righteous life.

A bad deed is one which causes HARM to yourself or your fellow man. If masturbation, fornication and other sins of the flesh cause no harm to yourself or your neighbour then they are not evil deeds.

Man is both a spiritual and physical entity. We need both a healthy mind and body. Masturbation and fornication pleasure the body as does reading and learning pleasures the body. As with almost everything, moderation is advised.

      Hi Josephine,
I appreciate your comment on the blog post. However, I respond to with you sadness but with enthusiasm because in the Lord you will find answers. The good word say “my people perish due to lack of knowledge.” I get your view point and as I said in the post, I understand where you are. However, even before I answer your question, I will point you to 1 John 4:1 [ On Denying the Incarnation ] Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits
to see whether they are from God
. Ask yourself, what is the spirit behind the actions, thoughts, lifestyle? Is it giving glory to God?

I used to justify sin with everything I had. “I have the right to do anything,” [you I used to say]—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. As 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 is very clear on sexual immorality.

Now to answer your question, read v18 on fornication that shows how one is defiling self through sexual sin. Galatians 5:18-20 as well talks about the various ways of the flesh that we should no live by. Remember, if your garment of righteousness is stained i.e. if have sin in your life, you will not enter the kingdom of God. So choose, would you do that action before God’s presence? God bless.

    Hi Josephine,

I was deligted to see your comment an hope i could share what i feel on the matter at hand.

The reason why we/ christians follow the Bible Tooth and Nail is because it is the word of God actually it is God. 1 John 1-1 “In the Beginning was the WORD and the word was with God and the Word was GOD.”

In Psalms 137:8-9 The Israelites are Crying to God to avenge for them after the suffering in Babylon, if you only read verse 9 that would be a mistake read the whole chapter. In todays Christian it stands for the days that i/we were/was in sin and how the devil and the demons had tormented my spirit and soul.
In Ezekiel 9:5 Ezekiel had a vision of heaven and he saw God and how God will punish Israel for rejecting him.( these will happen in the end times)

In Romans 7:23-25 we see Paul Struggling with flesh against the mind. When you believe in God it a constant struggle between the mind and the flesh and the Bible says in 1Corinthians 6:18-19 “Flee for sexual immorality. All other sins a man sins are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body(masturbating and fornication). Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?”

Ephesians 5:3 But among you there must not be a hint of sexual immorality,….
1 Thessalonians 4:3 it is Gods will that you should be santified; that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honourable……
1 Corinthians 5:1 it is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you…….
Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, murders, the sexual immoral

The Word of God goes on and on and you have your conscience to judge you.

About man being a physical and spiritual entity and giving pleasure to the body read
Romans 8:6-7 “The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”

You decide the path to follow.

Hi i-stopped. I love your blog (thanks for emailing it). I totally agree with your viewpoint. Especially about testing the spirit behind your actions/thoughts. I used to defend masturbation as being harmless and healthy. However, BEFORE I got saved, a Saved friend and I got into a discussion about Masturbation. I disagreed with her viewpoint that it is sinful and we “agreed to disagree”. But…the Spirit of Truth had spoken through her and what happened is, even though I was not saved then, I was never able to masturbate again! I could not do it! Any time I tried, my conscience rebelled and I just could not go through with it. Shortly thereafter I got saved and I give thanks to God for delivering me from ignorance and bondage wrought by that ignorance. I have of course since personally realized that Masturbation is in fact very harmful.

I have a question for you though. In your blog, you seem to be saying that oral sex with one’s spouse is wrong. Why would it be wrong?
